USA Today: “‘Porn wars’ flaring in the heartland”

The September 5 edition of USA Today reports on resistance to porn shops in small towns:

“The multibillion-dollar sex industry has branched into the heartland, often along interstates,” and that trend is spurring local governments and community activists to mount aggressive efforts to shut down adult stores that sell pornography, The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky., writes today.

In a story that focuses on what’s happening along Interstate 65 in Indiana’s Jackson County and connects it to a broader trend across the region and nation, the newspaper reports that “outraged residents” are trying to shut down a new adult shop, the Lion’s Den. Some are protesting outside the store seven days a week.

“We will be here till that is gone,” said former steelworker Douglas Hoskins, as he sat in a lawn chair beside the Lion’s Den driveway….

Scott Bergthold, a Chattanooga, Tenn., lawyer who works with local governments on adult-business cases, told the newspaper that one key for small towns and rural counties who want to control the shops is to draft solid, court-tested ordinances before such a store tries to move in.

From the original article in the Courier-Journal:

The adult businesses clearly understand the playing field, said Jackson County (Ind.) Attorney Rodney Farrow.

“They really prey on rural communities that don’t have the resources to fight them,” Farrow said.

  1. GOOB JOB BY THE PORN ENTHUSIASTS. HOW IS IT THAT THESE WOMEN PORN ACTIVISTS CAN CONFRONT PEOPLE ON THE OPPOSITE CORNER, DOING THEIR OWN THING? I OVERHEARD SOMEONE ON THIS SITE TALKING ABOUT ANOTHER BEING RUDE IN THEIR COMMENTS. WHAT IS MORE RUDE THAN OBSTRUCTING OTHER PEOPLE FROM THEIR FREE SPEECH? LET’S HEAR THE ANSWER TO THIS ONE !!!!!!!!!!! YOU PEOPLE HAVE A DOUBLE STANDARD GOING ON!!!

  2. FRIGHTENED??? WOW ARE YOU PEOPLE DENSE.I HAVE FACED FAR WORSE ADVERSARIES THAN YOU FOLKS !! ALL YOU PEOPLE DO IS TWIST AROUND THE COMMENTS POSTED IN HERE.YOU CLEARLY ARE BEING CONFRONTATIONAL TOWARDS THE PRO PORN FOLKS THAT WERE OUT THERE. IF YOU CANNOT HANDLE THE HEAT IN THE KITCHEN, GET IN THE LAUNDRY ROOM.

  3. It’s not twisting, Chief. It’s called an effective rebuttal. Pro-porn arguments tend to be distinguished by their lack of factual basis, rampant illogic and callousness.

  4. Lack of facts??? All one has to do is do a Google search for the benefits of pornography and they will see MANY facts on this.Rampant illogic?Good one.You seem to think that all of your rhetoric will change peoples thinking on this matter. Is it safe to say that you think that people are not capable of thinking for themselves? Stop forcing your opinions upon the people.

  5. Getting people to think more is what we’re all about.

If you Google the term anti-pornography, you get 205,000 English pages. Pro-pornography? 12,000. By all means we encourage people to do both and read all they can.

  6. Did I say do a Google search for PRO PORN? No,I did not.I said,THE BENEFITS OF PORNOGRAPHY.Once again, you twist things around.Use the search that I suggested.Over 3,000,00 0 pages worth.Once again you are only seeing things as you want to see them.

  7. That’s fine. I encourage people to search widely for information on this subject. The anti-pornography/pro-pornography pair seemed like a good matched set for comparison. I’m sure there are others.
