Midway into today’s Feminist Action Mobilization protest at 135 King Street, a group of pro-porn advocates (all young men) assembled nearby. Anti-porn activists came over to engage them in debate. A journalist and a photographer from the Boston Globe observed the action.
NoPornNorthampton suggested to one of the porn advocates that he read our website to understand our position. He replied that he was a hacker and would take our website down. Asked his name, he said, “I’m blah-blah-blah-blah-blah!”

Thank you. I am one of the people that were there that day to express my opinion on the situation. Its nice to see how close minded these people are. For an organized group of people that claim to support freedom of speech, they definatly censor what they put on there own website. During the event one of the women decided to ask my homosexual friend if he would enjoy “getting f***ed in the a** in a porno movie” while at the same time trying to hold there signs in front of our. We not only had support from the town while we were there, we were told we were supported by this group here. On there post they portray us as sexist males attacking a feminist group of people. Unfortunatly we have decided not to let them bad mouth and hide the truth. We have already decided that we will be attending the protest to support our opinions but we have been looking for more to join us. We have both males and females not only making signs and preparing for a professional debate/protest, but we have been taking the time and effort to get our opinions on the situation concrete so that we arent looked at as a bunch of hate supporting kids.
It’s called information, UncleMilty, not intimidation. If you were present at yesterday’s rally, you would have seen which side was using intimidation.
[Responding to Mark: “Thank you. I am one of the people…”] Do take your time. You are defending violent, misogynistic films. It could be a challenge.
WE HEAR SO MUCH ABOUT THE VIOLENCE PORN WILL CAUSE IN NORTHAMPTON, THE MOST VIOLENCE BEING CREATED IN THIS COMMUNITY IS BY EVERYONE OF THE ACTIVISTS. ACTIVIST ABUSED OUR MEN WHEN THEY RETURNED HOME FROM VIETNAM. THEY WERE WOUNDED, CRIPPLED & KIA { KILLED IN ACTION }. WHEN YOU PEOPLE EVER GIVE UP AND LET EVERYTHING TAKE IT’S COURSE NATURALLY. FOR A COMMUNITY OF SELF PROCLAIMED NATURAL PEOPLE YOU ARE A VERY VIOLENT GROUP OF PEOPLE. I WILL SAY A SPECIAL PRAYER FOR ALL OF YOU .
Here we see another common tactic of porn advocates–misdirection. Vietnam has little to do with this debate.
spare me your gutless response.
posting folks pics on your site clearly a shameful tactic.
you lacked credibility from the start. now you have ZERO.
People attending a public demonstration on a public issue are more than fair game for being photographed and reported on. Certainly the Boston Globe thinks so.
Our goal here is accountability. If people are doing worthy actions, we want others to see it. Same for unworthy actions.
Speaking of accountability, our names and contact information are public knowledge. Perhaps you would share with us your own name and address, and disclose if you have any financial relationship with Capital Video?
Misdirection???? Isn’t that what your all about???Misdirecting people by using words such as toxic waste dump/bombing range/crackouse??? And the best ones yet that I have seen….SLAVERY AND NAZISM!!! That right there is misdirection.HOW DARE YOU EVEN MENTION THAT TERM!!!! You people should really be ashamed of your self for even mentioning slavery and nazism. That is pushing things way too far.And I hope that more and more people will see what I just realized. That you are nothing more than a group of people that have nothing better to do with their time and when you seem to face a little opposition, you dig yourself a bigger hole by using those words.Slavery and Nazism?????PLEASE! That was uncalled for and pushed the limit a little too far.and don’t tell me that you didn’t say that becasue I saw it on one of your stupid little flyers going around. You people should really rethink where this is going because YOU just took it to a whole other level.Well below what you seem to think the pro porn group would do.Proves a point on how low you will go to try and get your point across.Nazism………..HOW DARE YOU!!!!
I hope you people DO show up in force next Wednesday but please remember to keep it civil. If you don’t they will use that against you.Keep it safe and simple and don’t even respond to them. You are doing a good thing. They are only upset because you are taking the spotlight away from them.Just keep it safe and simple.Remember that.Don’t do ANYTHING that they can use against you at all. That’s exactly what they want to happen.Good luck!I back your stance 100%.
I feel comfortable arguing that a porn shop causes as much social harm as a toxic waste dump, bombing range or crackhouse. We’ve certainly provided plenty of evidence.
Great response! Nothing said about what else I posted.Too ashamed now that you used those other words in your flyer?? Again you twist things and only respond to what YOU want to respond to.Why not comment on the rest of what I posted. You are really starting to take things too far at this point.Evidence that an ADULT BOUTIQUE will cause as much harm as a crackhouse/bombing range…??? More misdirecting on your part.I hope people will wake up and see what losers you people really are. Please.I would LOVE to hear your response on the connection between porn and slavery and nazism. Do you even have any idea about nazism and what it stood for??
A porn shop causes as much social harm as a toxic waste dump? I think I missed the article that outlines that comparison. Can you point me towards that one, please? I would like to see that evidence–I fear you’re confusing “opinion” with “evidence.”
Glad to, Jeff. Here’s a start–our comment on porn’s impact on marriage, a critical institution in dire straits in America today.
At least toxic waste dumps generally result from a productive enterprise. Similarly, a bombing range may play a role in defending our country. The long-term benefits of porn, however, are much harder to find, making the cost of porn that much more unsupportable.
I’m sure that the people in Vieques will be glad to know that you understand what they’re going through because there’s pornography in your town.
And I may be dense, but how does your commentary on porn’s impact on marriage serve as “evidence” that a porn shop causes as much soical harm as a bombing range? You should support such an assertion with verifiable facts, not conjecture.
Jeff, I guess you can harp on this side point all you want. My point is that porn is causing serious social harm, so that makes it a public issue. Property owners and business leaders are not entitled to blow off the public’s concerns about 135 King Street.
If you deny that porn and porn shops cause harm, or that their benefits outweigh the costs, how about some more evidence on your side?
[Referring to the anonymous comment that begins, “Misdirection???? Isn’t that what your all about???”] Go ahead and google “black slave porn” or “nazi porn.” What do you get? Numerous porn sites that sexualize slavery and Nazism. You’ll find the sexualization and romanticization of concentration camps, plantations, Nazis and slaveholders, etc. This is not a rare thing: it is rampant and being circulated and consumed everyday and everywhere.
Naivete and ignorance are evident here. Please get informed and expand your scope of knowledge.
OH SO MY STANCE HERE IS NOW IGNORANT? I would expect nothing less from people that think that their way of thinking is the only one that matters. Your response has it’s point but my point was HOW DARE YOU MENTION NAZISM IN YOUR STUPID LITLLE FLYER!!!! You expect intelligent people to believe this? You don’t give much credit to peoples thinking. All you are trying to do is force YOUR opinion on others.Face it,there is NOTHING you can do to prevent the store from opening so why don’t you stop stooping to low life tactics of bringing up things as SLAVERY AND NAZISM! I’m sure you have offeneded MANY by using those terms in you flyer.Oh and I also noticed that you felt my last reply wasn’t good enough to be posted here.Censorship?
Your previous comment was one of those we delayed while we considered its merits. Thanks for reminding us about it. It is now posted.
We have plenty of faith in people thinking for themselves. That’s why we’re providing such comprehensive information on this subject, so they can make informed judgments.
Porn and porn shops have physical effects on the real world that have been extensively studied. That changes the matter from an academic debate about opinions to confirmed facts that people need to act on.
The notion that people freeing themselves from self-restraint would lead to a sexual utopia might have been plausible in the 60s, but it’s laughable now.
I hope you’re not being serious when you say that your providing comprehensive information. What you’re really providing is a bunch of specious “evidence” that supports your views.
I suggest you check out what Ron Jeremy and xxxchurch.com are doing. Those anti-porn advocates are at least willing to let people listen to both sides of the debate.
I can’t remember where I read it, but it seems appropriate here, “do you expect me to do all of your work for you?”
In what way is our evidence specious? Did the researchers fabricate their studies? Did residents plant used condoms around sex shops? Are the therapists misunderstanding their clients with sexual illnesses? Are divorce lawyers mistaken about the factors in their clients’ divorces? Is Kenneth Guarino not a convicted criminal? Does Capital Video not sell “Use Em’ Abuse Em’ & Lose Em’ #9”?
We are aware of xxxchurch. It is an interesting approach that we’ll continue to study. As for listening to both sides, I’d say we’ve been generous about airing all kinds of views here, but let the people judge this, too.
We’ve done plenty of work. You’ve done far less. The fact is, there are far more facts supporting our position than yours. I also note that your blog, http://www.mopornnorthampton.com/, has been “off-line” for many days now. Not terribly enlightening.
IT REALLY IS AMAZING TO SEE… WHEN THIS SITE GETS A LITTLE OPPOSITION HOW LOW DOWN AND DIRTY PEOPLE CAN REALLY GET. SLAVERY & NAZISM ??? IS THERE ANYONE READING THE COMMENTS IN THIS SITE? THE THINGS GOING ON HERE ARE INCREDIBLE!!! WE GET ANSWERS FROM THE NPN TALKING ABOUT BEING FRIGHTENED, I THINK WITH ALL THE OPPOSITION NPN IS FRIGHTENED. HENCE THE REASON THEY HAVE TO STOOP SO LOW AS TO USE COMPARISONS LIKE, SLAVERY & NAZISM. SILLY SILLY SILLY. YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO LOSE THIS BATTLE JUST LIKE THE TERRORISTS WILL LOSE THEIR BATTLE EVENTUALLY. NOW THAT IS A GOOD COMPARISON, ACTIVISTS ARE EQUAL TO TERRORISTS.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13834042/ THIS WILL SUMMIZE ALOT OF THINGS AND PUT THEM INTO PERSPECTIVE. CHECK THIS OUT.
Please, folks, give your Caps Lock key a rest. It makes your comments hard to read.
Thanks for bringing this MSNBC story to our attention.
I particularly liked this part:
“You have to be married…no lust for people other than your spouse, no adultery (and that includes consensual threesomes and group sex) and no porn, rape or prostitution.”
Whatever Minister Beam is advocating, it certainly isn’t Capital Video pornography, which features plenty of adultery, among other things.
I am a noho resident and see absolutely nothing wrong with an adult store on King Street.
Thinking that pornography is wrong is simply your opinion.
Porn impacting marriges? If a little thing like porn can impact a marrige I guess the marrige isn’t that strong to begin with.
Furthermore, marrige much like religion is becoming an outdated practice more and more day by day.
If you ask me, this is simply a clear case of NIMBY, wherein some noho conservatives don’t want an adult store ‘ruining’ their pristine little town.
Given what I see on main street day by day, a porn shop should fit right in.
In short, let the shop come, if you don’t like porn, don’t enter.
There are always going to be some people who are impervious to the facts. Our FAQ (left side of home page) addresses your assertions about “nothing wrong”, “simply your opinion” and “if you don’t like porn, don’t enter”.
We’re against porn everywhere, so accusations of NIMBY don’t apply.
As for porn being a “little thing”, Dr. Victor Cline discusses how it can be so addictive that many of his clients “could not throw off their dependence on the material by themselves,
despite many negative consequences such as divorce, loss of family, and
problems with the law…”
I’m so glad you raised the issue of marriage being obsolete. This would certainly be news to many children of divorce. Barbara Whitehead presents excellent analyses of this issue in The Atlantic:
I support the cause. But I drove by and saw this in person, and cracked up. It was hilarious.
Please:
– Defend Northampton.
– Don’t attack porn.
—
For best results, stick to the neighboorhood/zoning issue, and appeal to people’s sense of NIMBY.
“Do you want crime and declining property value near the vibrant cultural center of Noho?”
No.
Do not attack porn. Most human beings with a pulse love and enjoy pornography, in some form. This issue can be debated forever on many levels, and it only works against you to raise such a passinate and unrelated debate.
“Do you like porn? Why?”
Don’t even dabble. It hurts the central issue.
This is a great focus to stick to:
“We support people’s right to free expression, and we also believe that porn shops should not be located next to homes, schools and churches,” says Jendi Reiter, legal counsel to NoPornNorthampton. “Case after case across the country state that these two goals are compatible, and that cities have the right to regulate the time, place and manner of viewing adult entertainment.”

Also:
nopornnorthampton.org might benefit from some clarity on the site. Have a box that says: “Quick and Easy! Protect Northampton culture in under five minutes!” Big, shiny, graphical button. Then send the user on a trail through all those activist pages, one after the next.
Spread word.
Thanks for your time.

Dear porn-lovers!
Hey man. Good show. That was hilarious.
Anyway, you’ve brought an important point to the surface: people love porn. It sells and sells and sells.
Please consider: if you win against the anti-porn demonstrators, you may lose in the big picture.
The central point is that the shop, at that location, will bring crime, disease, and poverty. It’s a weird thing to consider at a young age, but nieghborhoods can and do go downhill.
I love porn. It is wonderful. I honked for you as you went by. Yet I seriously hope that you and the anti-porn people can work together against the shop.
Imagine signs that say:
“I love porn. Elsewhere.”
or
“A store?!? Use the internet like everyone else!”
Anyway, I hope you guys can respect each other, and realize that you’re on the same side. Ignore the extremists, collaborate with the people who are real, and focus on the real goal: a wonderful Northampton.

We appreciate your suggestions. We believe it is entirely consistent both to support free expression and to express our opinion that porn is harmful and people should avoid it. There is a huge difference between advocating self-restraint (which trusts the judgment of the people) and state censorship (which does not). We believe that most people, in full possession of the facts, will make good decisions.
We are always looking for ways to improve the utility of our site. For example, we just added a new element to the left-hand column of the blog: “About ‘Secondary Effects'”. This new box gathers in one place our posts that give particular attention to the secondary effects of sexually oriented businesses. These effects include an increased risk of crime, disease, failure of surrounding businesses, reduced property values, hazardous trash and harassment of passersby. We will consider further improvements.
