Gazette: “Sweetening the deal? Free ads for owner if porn shop goes away”

Today’s Gazette reports on David Russell’s recent offer to the Goldbergs. Mr. Russell owns Commercial & Investment Properties magazine serving Western Massachusetts and Connecticut. The Goldbergs own 135 King Street in Northampton, which they are proposing to lease to Capital Video Corp. to be a large porn shop.

Mr. Russell pledges to “run a free full-color ad for your King Street property in my Western Mass. magazine for as long as it takes you to find a suitable tenant.”

The Gazette interviewed Mr. Russell by phone. He “described himself as a ‘firm believer’ in and ‘proponent’ of First Amendment rights. Nevertheless, he doesn’t think Capital Video’s planned store is a good fit for 135 King St., which he considers an extension of downtown… He said he understands the financial strain a vacant building can put on an owner and is prepared to forgo thousands of dollars in advertising revenue to market the building for the Goldbergs.”

The Gazette sought out the Goldbergs for comment on Tuesday, but they “could not be reached. Earlier attempts to reach Barry Goldberg also have been unsuccessful.”
