The Republican: “Proposals aimed at porn store”


Today’s Republican reports on proposed ordinances that will strengthen the regulation of adult businesses in Northampton:

“Ward 3 Councilor Marilyn A. Richards and Ward 6 Councilor Marianne L. LaBarge presented two ordinances at last week’s council meeting that could affect Capital Video, which wants to open an adult-theme store at 135 King St….

“Richards said the ordinances are intended to protect the public from unwanted exposure to the store’s materials.

“‘We’re trying to strike a very delicate balance between free speech and health and safety and property values,’ she said….

“‘The council referred the ordinances to the Ordinance Committee, which will take them up at its Sept. 12 meeting. They will then go before a joint meeting of the Ordinance Committee and the Planning Board on Sept. 28.

“‘People should come and express themselves,’ Richards said.”
