Green Sexuality Is a Concept Worth Exploring – Voices of American Sexuality Blog

Voices of American Sexuality is a blog hosted by American Sexuality Magazine and the National Sexuality Resource Center. They noticed our November 25 press release, which mentions our concept of “green sexuality”:

Before our loyal readers tear me apart, I think it’s worth exploring this concept a bit more in good faith. Here at American Sexuality Magazine and the National Sexuality Resource Center, we are debating constantly about whether or not porn is ok…

Until now, I hadn’t heard the ‘green sexuality’ argument, and it’s striking me as another interesting way to approach the porn argument. I’m all for new and interesting ways to approach sexuality because it’s clearer and clearer that we need new ways to think about sexuality, sexual health, and sexual expression. More new thinking raises the quality of the discussion from one of hate and vitriol to one of honest and open discussion. Kudos, NoPornNorthampton, thanks for adding something positive to the discussion.

AP: “Mother Nature feels the pain of divorce”
In countries around the world divorce rates have been rising, and each time a family dissolves the result is two new households…

“A married household actually uses resources more efficiently than a divorced household,” said Jianguo Liu, an ecologist at Michigan State University…

A household uses the same amount of heat or air conditioning whether there are two or four people living there. A refrigerator used the same power whether there is one person home or several…

…divorced households spent more per person per month for electricity compared with a married household…

Liu was studying the ecology of areas with declining population and noticed that even where the total number of people was less, the number of households was increasing…

A really inconvenient truth: Divorce is not green
[Referring to the same study as above]
“Not only the United States, but also other countries, including developing countries such as China and places with strict religious policies regarding divorce, are having more divorced households,” Liu said. “The consequent increases in consumption of water and energy and using more space are being seen everywhere.”

In the United States alone in 2005, divorced households used 73 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity and 627 billion gallons of water that could have been saved had household size remained the same as that of married households. Thirty-eight million extra rooms were needed with associated costs for heating and lighting…

The number of rooms per person in divorced households was 33 percent to 95 percent greater than in married households…

Pornography consumption had a most powerful effect on evaluations of the desirability and viability of marriage. Endorsement of marriage as an essential institution dropped from 60.0% in the control groups to 38.8% in the treatment groups…

The Impact of Internet Pornography on Marriage and the Family: A Review of the Research
The marital relationship is a logical point of impact to examine because it is the foundational family unit and a sexual union easily destabilized by sexual influences outside the marital contract. Moreover, research indicates the majority of Internet users are married and the majority seeking help for problematic sexual behaviour online are married, heterosexual males. The research indicates pornography consumption is associated with the following six trends, among others:

  1. Increased marital distress, and risk of separation and divorce,

  2. Decreased marital intimacy and sexual satisfaction,

  3. Infidelity

  4. Increased appetite for more graphic types of pornography and sexual activity associated with abusive, illegal or unsafe practices,

  5. Devaluation of monogamy, marriage and child rearing,

  6. An increasing number of people struggling with compulsive and addictive sexual behaviour.
These trends reflect a cluster of symptoms that undermine the foundation upon which successful marriages and families are established.

…the following observations were made by [the 350 attendees of the November 2002 meeting of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers] polled with regard to why the Internet had played a role in divorces that year…56 percent of the divorce cases involved one party having an obsessive interest in pornographic websites…

Whitty (2003) also found that both men and women perceive online sexual activity as an act of betrayal that is as authentic and real as offline acts and that Internet pornography use correlated significantly with emotional infidelity (N = 1,117; 468 males and 649 females)…

Porn Use Correlates with Infidelity, Prostitution, Aggression, Rape-Supportive Beliefs
In 2004, researchers also reported in Social Science Quarterly that “Individuals who have had an extramarital affair are 3.18 times more likely to have used Internet pornography than individuals who did not have affairs.”
