AP: “Widespread Teacher Sexual Misconduct Reported” (explicit language)

In October, The Associated Press announced it had “found more than 2,500 cases over five years in which educators were punished for actions from bizarre to sadistic.” The actual incidence of abuse is likely to be much greater, as “most of the abuse never gets reported,” and “those cases reported often end with no action.”

One report mandated by Congress estimated that as many as 4.5 million students, out of roughly 50 million in American schools, are subject to sexual misconduct by an employee of a school sometime between kindergarten and 12th grade. That figure includes verbal harassment that’s sexual in nature.

…many Americans deny the problem, and even treat the abuse with misplaced fascination. Popular media reports trumpet relationships between attractive female teachers and male students…

The AP investigation found efforts to stop individual offenders but, overall, a deeply entrenched resistance toward recognizing and fighting abuse…

Unless there’s a videotape of a teacher involved with a child, everyone wants to believe the authority figure, says Wayne Promisel, a retired Virginia detective who has investigated many sex abuse cases.

He and others who track the problem reiterated one point repeatedly during the AP investigation: Very few abusers get caught.

They point to several academic studies estimating that only about one in 10 victimized children report sexual abuse of any kind to someone who can do something about it…

When these cases break, defendants often portray the students as seducers or false accusers. However, every investigator questioned said that is largely a misconception…

Too often, problem teachers are allowed to leave quietly. That can mean future abuse for another student and another school district…

It’s a dynamic so common it has its own nicknames — “passing the trash” or the “mobile molester.”

…Victims also face consequences when teachers are punished.

In Pennsylvania, after news of teacher Troy Mansfield’s arrest hit, girls called Kline, his 12-year-old victim, a “slut” to her face. A teacher called her a “vixen.” Friends stopped talking to her. Kids no longer sat with her at lunch.
In light of this problem, let’s consider some typical porn scenarios, as discussed by Professor Gail Dines:

What pornography does, most importantly, is it puts lots of little scenarios in men’s heads, so that wherever you are you can activate that particular sexual scenario…

Every interaction between a woman and a man in pornography, and between women and women, mind you, is sexual, as in, when you’ve got a nanny, ’cause you can fuck the nanny, you can fuck the secretary [website: secretaryporn], you can fuck the maid [website: Maid Bangers], you can fuck the nurse [website: Nurse Hardcore], you can fuck the teacher [website: Teacher Galleries], or the student [website: NAUGHTY Book Worms, ‘Making The Grade. OUR WAY’].

Would any of you students like to go into a professor’s office for a seminar after he’s just jerked off to this?

…What happens in pornography is ultimately what is the most sexually arousing are the younger women [down] to children. So this is Pimp My Black Teen which of course trades in all the vile stereotypes that black women are not attractive and need to be turned out and improved by a pimp.

Now these kinds of images lead to the next, which is Barely Legal. Now Barely Legal is run by Hustler. It is one of Hustler’s flagship websites… The tagline on this is, ‘From the homeroom to the bedroom.’ Now it goes from this to Chester the Molester who is very well known in Hustler magazine, because what did Chester do? Chester went after a little girl. This was month in, month out in Hustler…

[The Cherry Poppers series is] made by Max Hardcore, which were instructional tapes to pedophiles on how to rape a child… What they do is help the pedophile get ready. They help season the pedophile to eventually season the victim. They normalize pedophilia. They provide ideas. This was so specific, that at the end of one of these segments, you’ve got Max Hardcore…he takes a camera and he takes a picture of her, and he says, ‘Listen, honey, if you tell anyone, I’m taking this picture to school and I’m going to show all your friends exactly what you did.’ Now, this is what pedophiles do to terrorize children all the time, and this is what Max Hardcore was doing. He was showing the pedophile a way to police and control the child.

The Impact of Internet Pornography on Marriage and the Family: A Review of the Research
[In a meta-analysis of 46 studies published in various academic journals,] Oddone-Paolucci, Genuis, and Violato found that exposure to pornographic material puts one at increased risk for developing sexually deviant tendencies [e.g., excessive or ritualistic masturbation], committing sexual offenses, experiencing difficulties in one’s intimate relationships, and accepting rape myths. In terms of the degree of risk, the analysis revealed a 31 percent increase in the risk of sexual deviancy, a 22 percent increase in the risk of sexual perpetration, a 20 percent increase in the risk of experiencing negative intimate relationships, and a 31 percent increase in the risk of believing rape myths…

…By eroticizing behaviors and values that are destabilizing to marriage, family, and the social good (e.g., rape, incest, child abuse, and bestiality), pornography becomes a powerful means through which maladaptive sexual behavior is normalized and learned…

Exposure to Pornography as a Cause of Child Sexual Victimization
Pseudo-child pornography portrays adult women as if they were young girls–not in the sexual acts they perform, but in the props used and the captions or text accompanying the pictures. The “childification” of women in pseudo-child pornography is accomplished by dressing them in childish clothes, giving them childish hairstyles, having them stand in childlike poses with childlike expressions on their faces, or surrounding them with children’s toys. A prevalent form of pornography, childification is also becoming increasingly mainstream (e.g., pop star Britney Spears dressing like a young school girl and dancing seductively in the popular video, “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” and the sale of school girl uniforms as lingerie by companies like Emporio Lingerie, Linay Lingerie, and Lollipop Lingerie). Masturbation to pseudo-child pornography can serve as a bridge between adult pornography and child pornography. The transition of a male’s arousal to child pornography can be achieved through a step-by-step process of exposure to gradually younger sexualized teenagers and eventually prepubescent girls…

Playboy, Hustler magazines all “covertly” normalize adult-child sex and promote sex with children (Mayne, 2000, p. 25). There are many examples–particularly of cartoons in Hustler–that quite blatantly legitimatize incestuous and extrafamilial child sexual abuse. Many of them trivialize child sexual victimization by repeatedly making jokes about this crime…

Showing pornography to boys and girls is a common seduction strategy of pedophiles who hope thereby to arouse children’s sexual curiosity or sexual desire…

When child molesters expose targeted children to pornography, the children often feel guilty and complicit, particularly if they found the material sexually exciting or masturbated to it. According to Scotland Yard, one of the five major ways that pedophiles use pornography is to “ensure the secrecy of any sexual activity with a child who has already been seduced” (Tate, 1990, p. 24). Child molesters can often silence their victims by telling them that their parents would be very upset to learn that they had watched pornography. Even without such warnings, children often fear that their parents will blame and punish them for having looked at this material. Children who are sexually abused following the exposure may feel complicit in the abuse and thus become even more motivated to remain silent. Ultimately, this reduces the likelihood that abused children will disclose the sexual abuse to their parents or others.

Testimony in Minneapolis: Ice cream man uses porn magazine to interest children in sex
Another way that we see pornography being used in the commission of crimes is showing them to kids. I remember an interesting case in which an ice cream man, a Good Humor man, always kept an open magazine by him as he drove along, and the kids would look at it. And he would use that as some kind of manipulative technique to involve the people into talking about sex or getting interested in sex, as a comment: have you ever seen anything like this before, or have you ever done anything like this previously…

Victim’s “Precocious Knowledge of Sexuality” Blocks Child Rape Conviction
Northampton’s Daily Hampshire Gazette reports today that a Hampshire Superior Court jury has acquitted Hubert Jaundoo, a local ma
n accused of raping his then-girlfriend’s seven-year-old daughter in 2001, after Jaundoo’s lawyer attacked the child’s credibility on the grounds that she was too sexually experienced:

His defense lawyer, David Hoose, argued the girl’s precocious knowledge of sexuality created a reasonable doubt as to whether her accusations against Jaundoo were accurate.

“The child was exposed to a lot of information about sex at an inappropriately early age,” Hoose said in a telephone interview Tuesday. How or by whom she was exposed to this information is unclear, he said.
Jaundoo was originally convicted of the charges in 2003 and sentenced to 18-20 years, but the Appeals Court overturned that verdict in 2005 on the grounds that the jury should not have been allowed to hear about the large collection of pornography found in Jaundoo’s home.

The appellate ruling is hard to square with evidence such as this testimony before the Minneapolis Government Operations Committee during the 1983 civil rights hearings on pornography. Bill Neiman of the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office found that not only was it common to discover pornography in the homes of sexual abusers, it was more common when the victim was a child. Jaundoo’s possession of porn was absolutely relevant to the case. According to the Springfield Republican:

When the victim testified four years ago, she said Jaundoo would sometimes give her a dollar after making her engage in sex acts with him, and showed her a pornographic video and magazines. She also testified Jaundoo said her mother would beat her if she told anyone about the sexual abuse.
The implications of yesterday’s verdict could further stigmatize and silence victims of child sexual abuse and deter them from seeking justice in court. In the days before feminism, a woman who was “tainted” by past sexual activity was deemed not credible in a rape trial. Whether or not Jaundoo raped this girl, someone clearly abused her (or was grossly negligent) by exposing her to inappropriate sexual materials. Now the court system is telling her that her victimization makes her “tainted”, that her assertions of abuse have no value.

Porn’s Verbatim Accounts of the Pleasures of Child Sexual Abuse Don’t Square with Reality
Child sexual abuse has been reported up to 80,000 times a year, but the number of unreported instances is far greater, because the children are afraid to tell anyone what has happened, and the legal procedure for validating an episode is difficult…

Researchers estimate that, in our country, about 10% of boys and 25% of girls are sexually abused…

Gazette: “Links between porn, pedophilia explained”
David L. Burton is chairman of education and training for the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers based in Oregon. “We know a few things,” he says. “There is a relationship between these two groups–many child abusers, especially abusers who love their victims, use child pornography as part of preparation for an offense.”

… We recall that porn itself urges distorted beliefs on its viewers. An analysis of incest fiction, for example, reveals prevalent myths such as “Incest is harmless”, “Daughters seduce their fathers”, “Coercion plays no role in incest”, “Any physical harm is so temporary that it is like a fantasy” and “Fathers have incest with their daughters out of love”…

Dr. Mary Anne Layden is Co-Director, Sexual Trauma and Psychopathology Program, Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania. She observes,

…Pornography Distortion is a set of beliefs based in pornographic imagery, sent to the viewer while they are aroused and reinforced by the orgasm. An example of Pornography Distortion would include beliefs such as “Sex is not about intimacy, procreation or marriage. Sex is about predatory self-gratification, casual recreation, body parts, violence, feces, strangers, children, animals and using women as entertainment.” All of these are messages regularly sent by pornography.

Permission-Giving Beliefs are a set of beliefs that imply that my behavior is normal, acceptable, common and/or doesn’t hurt anyone so I have permission to continue to behave in the way that I am. In all types of violence and addiction, Permission-Giving Beliefs are involved. Examples would include “All men go to prostitutes”, “Women like sex mixed with violence” and “Children enjoy sex with adults”. These particular Permission-Giving Beliefs are also common in pornography.

“Bin The Bunny” Targets Playboy UK (explicit language)
Anti-Porn UK are opposed to the continuing expansion of Playboy as the acceptable face of porn, its increasing cross-over into everyday culture under the guise of ‘cute’ products – often targetted to appeal to young girls – and the continuing attempt to promote the message to girls and young women that being a playboy ‘bunny’ is to be desirable and successful.

Testimony in Minneapolis: Role of Porn in Child Sexual Abuse; Pornographers Perpetuate, Profit from Dysfunction
Playboy ran one cartoon of a little girl getting dressed and saying derisively to an old man in a robe, “and you call that being molested!” The old man standing there looking very inept and foolish, INADEQUATE.

This cartoon accuses the little girl of being the seducer, and gives her all the power, and believe me, a 10-year-old girl who attempts suicide, sometimes successfully, rather than sleep with Dad or Uncle again, has no power

Some Porn Hard to Distinguish from Training for Pedophiles (explicit language)
A subgenre of pornography sexualizes differences in age. Because of strict laws banning child pornography, actual children are almost never used in commercial pornography sold above ground. But videos are available that highlight the differences in ages between adults (such as women in their 20s and men over 50) or that use such markers as clothing and hair styles to portray adult women as children…

[A] scene in Senior Stimulation involved a man who appeared to be in his 50s coming into the bedroom of a woman who appeared to be in her 20s, but was dressed as a teenager in a child’s dress, saddle shoes, and hair barrettes. When the man determined that the book she was reading is about fish, he begins a conversation about checking her vagina, which he called her “fish tank”…

The woman in that scene was clearly an adult, but the intent was the sexualization of an adult-child relationship. This strategy was the basis for the video Cherry Poppers Vol. 10. Four of the five scenes were sex between different women who appeared to be in their 20s and “Max”, who appeared to be in his 40s… The fifth scene used a different man who looked to be in his 30s. Each of the women dressed in a child’s uniform: some combination of bows in the hair, pigtails, either short socks or knee socks, saddle shoes, frilly dresses, or school uniforms. These women also had smaller breasts and were more slightly built than is typical in pornography. The scenarios had Max providing the woman/girl with her first sexual experience. A detailed description of one of the vignettes shows how this video not only depicted child-adult sex, but offered realistic, detailed instructions on how to initiate a child into sex, a manual for how to perpetrate a sexual assault on a child.

In this scene, the girl went into a house, where she called out for her older sister. Max entered the house shortly after her, also looking for the sister. After he found the girl in her sister’s bedroom snooping into her sister’s possessions, Max said that if the girl was good to him, he would not tell the sister about her snooping. Acting confused, as one would expect a child to be in such a situation, the girl is told by Max that he would “show you what boys like” but that they would have to be careful because if the sister found them, “She’ll get mad.”

Max then showed the girl how to fondle his penis, instructing her to “give it a little kiss, don’t be afraid, suck it. Just like a sucker, just like a lollipop…” He also showed her how to produce enough saliva to make the oral sex pleasurable for him.

After he put her up on the sink and basin and shaved her pubic hair, Max penetrated her with his fingers before vaginal intercourse, something rapists of girls often find necessary in order to stretch the child’s vagina so that it can accept the penis. He then penetrated her anus with his fingers before anal intercourse. Although her facial expression suggested she was in pain, she said, “This is fun, mister…”

Throughout the sexual activity Max alternated gentle talk of her being a “good girl” with rougher reminders that she was a cunt. “Say it,” he demanded. “‘I’m a little cunt.’ Can you say ‘teenage  fuckmate’? Say it. Repeat it.” He told her how fun it was but reminded her not to tell her sister. He treated her as if she was his special friend, yet also spit in her mouth at one point. These are the standard strategies of a pedophile: alternating affection and abuse to leave the child confused, a
nd telling the child that the sex is special but must be kept a secret from others.

In addition to the cues to age in the women’s appearance, they also “acted” like girls in these scenes. They were more passive than other women in pornography and had to be explicitly directed through sexual acts. The men in these scenes were more overtly controlling, moving the women’s heads and bodies to position them as they desire. The women were generally more quiet, not vocalizing moans of pleasure; they were more likely to giggle in a childish voice or be silent.
